Does 4K Get More Views on YouTube? 693 Pairs From the Same Channels

54%

a coin flip: how often the higher-res video won

The short answer

No. In 693 pairs of a viral and a normal video from the same channel, both had the same max resolution 85% of the time. When they differed, the higher-resolution one was the viral one 54% of the time. That’s a coin flip.

1080p is the bar. Above it, nobody can tell

94% of both viral and normal videos were 1080p or higher. 4K, 60 fps and HDR showed up just as often on the videos that flopped.

What to do

Record in 1080p and spend the saved time, storage and editing speed on the idea. I switched from 4K to 1080p myself for exactly this reason.

How I did it

For 693 viral/normal pairs from the same channels, we read each video’s best available format (resolution, frame rate, HDR) and compared the two sides.

The limits

This measures what was uploaded, not how viewers watched it. Image quality can still matter for brand deals or a channel built around visuals.
